See the Great American Eclipse poster
10.00 20.00

This beautiful poster is a collaboration between Michael Zeiler of GreatAmericanEclipse.com and Tyler Nordgren of SpaceArtTravelBureau.com and TylerNordgren.com. Michael is a cartographer and illustrator and Tyler is a professor of astronomy and illustrator. The poster is inspired by a 1912 French illustration depicting the solar eclipse that crossed Europe that year. Michael did the map and art showing the geometry of the Earth, Moon and Sun and Tyler applied his distinctive illustration and typographic style to pay homage to early 20th century eclipse art.

The glossy poster measures 12" x 18" and is printed on heavy card stock. It comes rolled and shipped inside a durable tube. While the placement of the Sun and Moon takes artistic license, the path plotted across the United States is accurate.

The first total solar eclipse touching the continental United States since 1979 touches down on the Oregon coast between Lincoln City and Newport at 10:15 a.m. PDT. Before Oregon, the shadow of the Moon (umbra) does not touch any other landmass or island before Oregon.

Oregon will be one of the most popular states to view the eclipse. While the rest of the United States offers a longer duration of totality, sections of the eclipse path in Oregon offers the best weather prospects anywhere along the entire eclipse path.

As the Moon's shadow crosses into Idaho over the Snake River, the eclipse will traverse over mountainous terrain. Idaho will be a desirable state to view the eclipse because of good weather prospects. The low population density should keep the roads reasonably clear and there are many scenic vantage points in Idaho.

Nebraska, the Cornhusker State, is neatly bisected by the path of the total solar eclipse. As the state is dominated by treeless prairies and crop fields, there will be little interference of the total eclipse of the Sun by trees, terrain, or structures. Conveniently, a very long stretch of Interstate 80 from before North Platte to the edges of Lincoln is within the path of totality.

The shadow of the Moon passes over the northeast corner of Kansas. The northern suburbs of Kansas City, Kansas will see the eclipse but residents of this area are urged to drive 40 or 50 miles to the north or east to increase your potential duration of totality up to 2 minutes and 40 seconds. Leavenworth receives 1 minute and 32 seconds of darkness. Atchison clocks in at 2 minutes and 17 seconds. Points near St. Joseph, Missouri will enjoy 2 minutes and 39 seconds, near the maximum total duration for this eclipse.

The total solar eclipse reaches the state at 1:02 p.m. CDT and exits at 1:09 p.m.

Missouri is well known as the Show Me State. They will receive quite a show on August 21, 2017! After the eclipse crosses many sparsely populated regions of the American west, the eclipse finally reaches cities with significant populations. St. Joseph on the Missouri River is smack on the centerline and will enjoy a generous 2 minutes and 38 seconds of totality. The southern edge of totality splits Kansas City with the northern suburbs and the nearby city of Independence under the Moon's shadow. However, the citizens of Kansas City would be encouraged to head a bit north on Interstate 35 to increase eclipse duration from less than a minute to 2 minutes and 38 seconds near Lathrop or St Joseph. This day trip would be well worth the effort as every second of totality will be valuable.

In the central section of Missouri, Marshall, Boonville, and Columbia are well positioned to experience over 2 minutes and 30 seconds of the total solar eclipse. Jefferson City will see 2 minutes and 27 seconds of totality.

St. Louis has a similar situation as Kansas City and is bisected by the northern limit of totality. Again, citizens of St. Louis would be smart to head south on Interstate 55 to Festus (2 minutes and 37 seconds) or St. Genevieve (2 minutes and 40 seconds) near the centerline of the eclipse. Although Cape Girardeau is closer to the edge of the eclipse path than the center line, it still experiences a respectable 1 minute and 41 seconds under the Moon's shadow. The Moon's shadow races across Missouri at about 1,900 miles per hour!

One of the major cities visited by the eclipse is Nashville, Tennessee. Folks in Nashville will be singing about this eclipse for years to come as it is the largest city wholly within the path of totality.

Clarksville experiences 2 minutes and 19 seconds of totality. Gallatin gets 2 minutes and 40 seconds of darkness. While Nashville is not far from the southern limit of the path, it still receives a respectable 1 minute and 57 seconds. Lebanon gets 2 minutes and 37 seconds and Cookeville receives 2 minutes and 32 seconds.Oak Ridge and Knoxville are just outside the path of totality and people there would be urged to drive about 40 or 50 miles south or west. Madisonville is on deck for 2 minutes and 37 seconds.

The total solar eclipse first enters the state at 2:25 p.m. CDT and leaves the state at 3:36 p.m. EDT (there is a time zone change within Tennessee). Within the state, the Moon's shadow rushes at about 1,800 miles per hour!

The Great American Eclipse slides across the southwest corner of North Carolina at the Great Smokey Mountains National Park.

If the crowds are manageable, these mountains may be an appealing venue to watch the eclipse. The reason is that from a high vantage, you'll also have the chance to see the surrounding landscape darken and brighten again as totality races across. But be sure to have a vantage unobstructed by trees.

Andrews, North Carolina is on the centerline of the path of totality and will see 2 minutes and 39 seconds. Franklin will enjoy 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Since the portion of North Carolina within totality is small, the Moon's shadow will pass quickly. The total solar eclipse first touches North Carolina at 3:33 p.m. EDT and exits at 3:49 p.m. EDT.
